Vastu for Plot’s Shapes

Rectangular Plot: Rectangular plot is auspicious in the ratio of 1:2 and if the length is facing North and breadth is facing West then the inmates reap rich benefits from the plot in terms of health, wealth and prosperity.

Square Plot: Square plot having with equal length and width is always ideal plot for any type of construction. This type of plot bestows inmate’s all-round success and harmony.

Gau-Mukhi Plot: Gau-mukhi plot is one which is narrow from the front area and broad at the back. This type of plot is very auspicious for residential purpose and bestows good health, wealth and prosperity.

Sher-Mukhi Plot: Sher-mukhi plot contrary to gau-mukhi is just opposite broad from front and narrow at the back. This type of plot is not considered good option for residences but can be used for commercial construction.

Oval/Circular/Elliptical Plot: Oval/circular/elliptical plot are irregular shapes in plots which are not considered good for any purpose and people living on such type of plots never flourish.

Plots Having Four or More Sides: Such as hexagon, pentagon and octagon must be avoided for anyway as they tend to bring bad luck for inmates.

Plots having cut corner from either side are not considered good as they are not appropriate for construction both according to Vastu and science. Plots having a cut off from North-east corner are inauspicious to buy, thus avoid it. According to Vastu North-east is scared share of a site which should be kept clean & unobstructed and receives maximum morning sunlight therefore if this part is cut off or occupied by other than occupants have to suffer. Plots having extension towards South-east, North-west or South-west are not good for building as they receive harmful rays of sun leading to warming up the area.

Vastu Tips for Shape 

The shape should be such that there must be only four corners in a Plot.

Plot on “T” Junction should be avoided.

Extended Plots

Plots at dead end should be avoided.

The corners should have the angle of 90 degrees.

The ratio of Length: Breadth in a rectangular Plot should not exceed 1:2

The direction of East West should be 90 degrees. Slight deviation of 10-15 degrees is acceptable

Vastu for Main Door

The main door should always be in the north, north-east, east, or west, as these directions are considered auspicious. Avoid having the main door in the south, south-west, north-west (north side), or south-east (east side) directions.

The East and North facing plots are appropriate for house construction. Care should be taken while designing the house facing West and South direction because some directions have positive impacts while the other have negative on occupants of the house.

Entrance of a house predicts many a things about the occupants in the house in terms of nature and especially health. Having kitchen right in the entrance is a major flaw in the house and in such cases focus on food is very intense. Kitchen right in front of entrance either on left or right side is problematic for house mates and there is a probability of lethargy, frequent health and stomach problems is quite high. Location of the plot: Avoid buying residential plots near cemetery or hospitals as they are storehouses of negative energies and infections. Any obstruction like bridge, electric pole, hill or a building in the north and east side should be avoided, as it blocks sunlight, however, anything in the west and south can be compromised as it impedes entry of negative energies.

Uniformity of the plot: A flat land should be preferred for residential construction. However, if there are slants then plots with north-east or south-west slopes should be considered as they are extremely propitious.

Westward slopes should be avoided as they lead to health problems and incongruity among family members. One should also watch out for a valley around the plot or depression on the land as they are believed to be inauspicious. Besides, avoid purchasing the plot that is situated between two large plots as it symbolizes poverty.

Meaning of Colors

White: White color signifies purity, cleanliness, openness, innocence, simplicity and luxury. Since it also represents privacy and intimacy, you should not paint the whole house white, else you may become egocentric.

Yellow: Yellow represents happiness, purity, positive thoughts, optimism, openness, illumination, intelligence, study, stable mind, wealth and concentration.

Hence, people having behavioral issues can use more of yellow color.

Orange: Orange color characterizes pride, determination, goals, communication, good health, vivacity, warmth, action, energy, comfort and ease. It’s a color that can be used by people who feel depressed with life.

Place the selected chart on the dial of instrument in such a way that centre – pin comes out from the centre point of a chart.

The Vastu Purush and Vastu Mandala, is the main base of Classical Vastu. It is mentioned in Matsya Puran, that one weird personality emerged from a drop of Lord Shiva’s sweat when he was fighting a war with Asuras. This weird person was cruel and when he was granted the boon of eating anything from the three worlds by Lord Shiva, he devoured everything on his way.

The legend of the Vastu Purusha is related thus. Once a formless being blocked the heaven from the earth and Brahma with many other gods trapped him to the ground. This incident is depicted graphically in the Vastu Purusha Mandala with portions allocated hierarchically to each deity based on their contributions and positions. Brahma occupied the central portion - the Brahmasthana- and other gods were distributed around in a concentric pattern. There are 45 gods in all including 32 outer deities.

The Science of Vastu is based essentially on directions. As such, a thorough knowledge of directions and their significance, according to Vastu, is imperative when constructing a building. Directions play a very important role while constructing the building as per Vastu guidelines. Ever since ages, directions had been very important, people minutely observed the shadows cast by the sun in order to check the direction in past. According to science there are 10 directions but generally for the knowledge we consider only eight directions.

Vastu Directions

Direction plays an important role in Vastu. Right knowledge of directions is very important to make a building structure according to Vastu. In total there are ten directions. There are total eight main directions, four are major directions (North, South, East and West) and four are sub directions (NE, SE, SW, NW). North, South, East, and West are called cardinal directions and the point where any of the two directions meet is called intercardinal or ordinal point like NE, SE, SW, NW. These directions are given a lot of importance in Vastu Shastra.

10 Directions According to Vastu

East (Purva): This direction is governed by lord Indra and he is known to be the king of Gods.  It is considered most auspicious & holy of all directions. While sleeping your legs should not face east.

West (Paschim): This direction is directed by Lord Varun, the lord of rains. He bestows his blessings in the form of natural water-rain, brings prosperity and pleasures of life. This direction is not considered auspicious. You may plant long tree in the west.

North (Uttar): This direction is governed by Kuber, the god of wealth. A house entrance facing north brings prosperity.

South (Dakshin): This direction is of Yama, the god of death. He is manifestation of dharma, and eradicates evil forces and bestows good things. It is a source of wealth, crops and pleasure. Houses with entrance doors in the south bring ill-luck to the occupants. While sleeping your legs should never face south.

North-East (Ishanya): This place is a supervised by lord Ishanya, and is a source of wealth, health and success. He brings us wisdom, knowledge and relieves us from all miseries and mishaps. A pooja (worship) room should be kept in the north-eastern direction. House entrance placed in this direction brings prosperity, knowledge peace & progress.

South-East (Agneya): This direction is governed by lord of fire- Agni. He gives us good personality and all good things of life. Fire is a source of health as it is related to fire, cooking and food. The kitchen of the house should be situated in this direction. For ensuring their durability, electronic gadgets & appliances should be kept in this direction.

South-West (Nairutya): This direction is directed by Niruti, the god who protects us from evil foes. It is a source of character, demeanor, case of longevity and death. Therefore, it is banned for all auspicious functions. This direction should be filled with heavy unmovable.

North-West (Vayavya): This place is directed by lord Vayu and he brings on us good health, strength and long life. It is a source of change in course of business, friendship and enmity. This direction is favored by Lord Hanuman (Monkey God, son of Vayu). For immediate & certain success, this direction is chosen as the point of beginning in any undertaking.

Skywards (Urdhwa/ Akash): Further sub divided into seven parts depending upon the height.

Downwards (Adharastha/ Patal): Also sub divided into seven parts depending upon depth.

Introduction of Vastu Shastra

Vastu shastra is a traditional Hindu system of architecture which literally translates to "science of architecture. “These are texts found on the Indian subcontinent that describe principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement, and spatial geometry. Vastu Shasta’s incorporate traditional Hindu and in some cases Buddhist beliefs.

Vastu Shastra is the textual part of Vastu Vidya. Vastu Vidya knowledge is a collection of ideas and concepts, with or without the support of layout diagrams that are not rigid. Rather, these ideas and concepts are models for the organization of space and form within a building or collection of buildings, based on their functions in relation to each other, their usage and to the overall fabric of the Vastu. Ancient Vastu Shastra principles include those for the design of Mandir (Hindu temples), and the principles for the design and layout of houses, towns, cities, gardens, roads, water works, shops and other public areas.
